Why unflavored
The most common question about this product is why it has no flavor. It is a fair question. Most electrolyte products come in six flavors minimum. This one comes in none. The answer is not that flavor is bad. The answer is that a flavor system is a proprietary additive blend whose only job is taste — and if your job is transparency, that is the one thing you can least afford to hide behind.
What “natural flavor” actually means
The FDA defines “natural flavor” by its source, not by what it contains. Almost anything that starts from a plant, animal, or fermentation qualifies — regardless of how many processing steps follow.
Under 21 CFR 101.22, a natural flavor is “the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or any other edible portions of a plant, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof.” The definition is about origin, not about simplicity.
In practice, a “natural flavor” declaration can cover a complex proprietary blend of dozens of constituent compounds, each derived from a qualifying source. The manufacturer knows what is in it; you do not. The flavor house that supplies it treats the formula as a trade secret. “Natural flavor” on a label is a category, not a disclosure.
This is not a condemnation of flavored products — flavors are regulated and generally regarded as safe. It is a description of what the declaration actually communicates, which is less than it appears to.
- Artificial flavor
- Defined by exclusion: under 21 CFR 101.22, any flavoring substance that is not derived from the natural sources enumerated above. In practice that means synthesized rather than plant- or animal-sourced — but otherwise the same opaque-blend situation applies.
- Proprietary blend
- The actual contents of a flavor system, owned by the flavor house, not disclosed on the label. Both natural and artificial flavors are proprietary blends by default.
Why almost every brand flavors
Flavor does two things a product team values: it differentiates a SKU on the shelf, and it masks the taste of the functional ingredients underneath.
Differentiation is real. “Tropical Punch” and “Arctic Berry” are distinct shelf positions. They give retail buyers something to do with the planogram. They give marketing a campaign angle. The flavor name is not just a description of what something tastes like — it is a product identity.
Masking is also real. Sodium at meaningful electrolyte doses has a perceptible taste — particularly at higher sodium levels, it reads as salty or mineral. Magnesium can be bitter. A flavor system covers those tastes, making a higher-dose formula more palatable without requiring the formulator to lower the dose. This is a legitimate technique.
The cost is additional ingredients, typically paired with a sweetener and often with a colorant that reinforces the flavor signal. The more identity a flavor creates, the more it pulls in its associated packaging: a citrus drink tends toward yellow, a berry drink toward red or blue. The flavor system is rarely the only thing that changes.

Unflavored
- Mixes into water, coffee, juice, broth — anything.
- No sweetener or dye required alongside it.
- Full ingredient transparency — every constituent is on the label.
- Dose to your own sodium needs without a flavor ceiling.
- No taste to tire of; suitable for all-day use.
The mixability argument is underrated. An unflavored electrolyte powder goes into coffee without tasting wrong. It goes into a protein shake without fighting the protein flavor. It goes into a bottle of water that already has something in it. A flavored electrolyte mix does none of those things cleanly.
The transparency argument is more fundamental. Every ingredient in our formula is disclosed by name and amount. There is no proprietary blend, no flavor house, no constituent list we do not know. What the label says is what is in the packet — nothing more, nothing hidden.
This is a philosophy argument, not a mechanism one
The case for unflavored is not that natural flavors are dangerous, or that any specific flavoring compound is harmful at normal doses. The evidence does not say that.
The case is simpler: flavor is an additive, and we are a product defined by not adding things we do not need. We need electrolytes. We need a sodium-to-potassium ratio calibrated to sweat. We need the small dextrose dose that activates SGLT1 in Quick Rehydrate. We do not need anything else, and flavor is the most prominent example of something that is wanted — palatability, identity, shelf presence — but not needed for the underlying function.
Some people genuinely prefer a flavored product. The taste of plain water with mineral salts is not for everyone, and we are not going to argue it is. If the unflavored format is a barrier, other products exist. We are not trying to win every customer. We are trying to serve the customer who wants the simplest possible thing that does the job well.
